Rehearsal of Justice is a series of participatory gatherings to enact justice and reflect on the basic human rights of undocumented people. Recently, Marjolijn Faber, the Minister of Migration withdrew funding for the “bed, bath, and bread” regulation—shelter for undocumented refugees— forcing closures and pushing many into the streets. Through conversations, testimonies, and performances, Rehearsal of Justice revisits the history and current struggles around this policy, bringing together those directly affected, lawyers fighting these decisions, and social and political advocates seeking change.

Geblinddoekt zet de figuur van Justitia een stap voorwaarts boven een afgrond van uitwissing en verlating. Ze beweegt zich langs een strak koord, gespannen tussen macht en kwetsbaarheid, waar elke stap een fragiele maar uitdagende strijd is naar waardigheid, waarheid en collectieve kracht.
Rehearsal of Justice is een reeks bijeenkomsten waarin we samen rechtvaardigheid oefenen en reflecteren op de basis rechten van mensen zonder verblijfspapieren. Onlangs trok Marjolijn Faber, de Minister voor Migratie, de financiering in voor de ‘bed, bad, brood’-regeling – opvang voor uitgeprocedeerde asielzoekers – wat leidde tot sluitingen en velen op straat zette. Door gesprekken, getuigenissen en voorstellingen duikt Rehearsal of Justice in de geschiedenis en de huidige strijd rond dit beleid. We horen de getuigenissen van zij die dit direct aangaat, advocaten die deze beslissingen bevechten, en maatschappelijke en politieke pleitbezorgers voor verandering.

Featuring
Gladys, Souleyman & Justin – Storytellers and experts in lived experience toward justice. Each shares a true story from their journey, confronting the limits and possibilities of the law.
Verhalenvertellers en experts door ervaring op weg naar rechtvaardigheid. Ieder deelt een waargebeurd verhaal van hun reis, waarin ze de grenzen en mogelijkheden van de wet confronteren.
Drs. Jordan Dez – Assistant Professor of Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, researching human rights claims of irregular migrants in Europe and the U.S. Dez will explore how migration law is interpreted and how legal struggles connect to broader social movements.
Universitair docent Recht aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, en doet onderzoek naar mensenrechtenclaims van irreguliere migranten in Europa en de VS. Dez onderzoekt hoe migratierecht wordt geïnterpreteerd en hoe juridische strijd verbonden is met bredere sociale bewegingen.
Pim Fischer – Social lawyer and initiator of the Bed, Bath, and Bread regulation. Recently sued the Minister of Migration over shelter closures. Fischer will discuss the recent verdicts in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and what it takes to push these legal victories into real-world implementation.
Sociaal advocaat en initiatiefnemer van de Bed, Bad, Brood-regeling. Hij Sspande onlangs een rechtszaak aan tegen de Minister voor Migratie wegens het sluiten van opvanglocaties. Fischer bespreekt de recente uitspraken in Amsterdam en Rotterdam, en wat er nodig is om deze juridische overwinningen om te zetten in daadwerkelijke verandering.
Joset van der Hoeven – Project coordinator of Netwerk Ongedocumenteerden Onderdak (NOO), an initiative of Stichting LOS. Van der Hoeven will reflect on the pros and cons of shared housing models—where undocumented and documented residents live together under one roof.

Julien Ignacio – Writer of novels, short stories, blogs, and theatre scenarios. His latest novel, Goudjakhals, is a global story of migration and resilience, which earned him the Amarte Literature Prize in 2024. Ignacio will read selected short stories from the book.
Schrijver van romans, korte verhalen, blogs en theaterscenario's. Zijn laatste roman, Goudjakhals, is een globaal verhaal over migratie en veerkracht, waarmee hij in 2024 de Amarte Literatuurprijs won. Ignacio leest geselecteerde korte verhalen uit het boek voor.
Sven Lütticken – Art historian, critic, and editor. He teaches art history at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and theory at DAI, and regularly publishes in journals such as New Left Review, Texte zur Kunst, e-flux journal, Grey Room, and Afterall. Lütticken will speak about tribunals organized by artists and activists as spaces of collective justice.

Alexia Magiru - Law student at University of Amsterdam, currently engaged in legal research about human rights, particularly in the EU context.

Elke Uitentuis & Tefferi – Artists from the collective We Sell Reality. They will share the story of Vluchtmaat, an alternative shelter they helped organize in Amsterdam—how it functioned, what impact it had, and what became of their proposal for a new model of housing for the undocumented.
Kunstenaars van het collectief We Sell Reality. Zij delen het verhaal van Vluchtmaat, een alternatieve opvang die zij mede organiseerden in Amsterdam – hoe het functioneerde, welke impact het had, en wat er werd van hun voorstel voor een nieuw huisvestingsmodel voor ongedocumenteerden.
Larrisa Vlieger – Member of GroenLinks and representative of the Municipality of Rotterdam. Vlieger will discuss the current situation of shelters in Rotterdam and the mobilization efforts that followed their closure.

About Ehsan Fardjadniya
Ehsan Fardjadniya is a visual and performance artist living in exile. With a background in fine arts and a strong focus on storytelling through hybrid and documentary performance forms, his work explores themes of displacement, memory, and the porous boundary between dreams and reality. He has presented his films, performances, and installations internationally, and continues to experiment with animation, co-creative methods, and narrative structures that invite non-actors and audiences to engage as active participants.
Recent projects such as ‘Edgelanders: Amsterdam on Trial’ and ‘Rehearsal of Justice’ explore collective agency, legal imagination, and participatory performance as tools for reclaiming justice narrative power of undocumented people. Next to those projects he is working on his first feature length film ‘House of Dreams’.
