The Land In Between
How Capital and Militarism Overtook Cyprus
a talk by Elina Xenophontos and a collective reading
organized by Iliada Charalambous
as part of Assembling in Resistance
The talk will explore today’s capital and militaristic take over of the island’s land, cities and infrastructure as rooted in the island’s history. As is the case with many former colonies, Cyprus still has sovereign British military bases on its land which have been actively used to aid the zionist genocide in Palestine since October 7th and have turned the island into a floating aircraft base used by imperial powers. Looking through an anti-imperialist lens, we understand the link between the increased militarization that we see on the island but also the booming real estate industry ‘developed’ extensively by foreign (and specifically “Israeli”) capital which now dominates Cypriot cities. For decades now, the real estate industry under the guise of so-called development has allowed political leverage and influence to a variety of imperialist actors. At the same time, this steep increase has transformed the landscapes both in the South and North of the island and began an unprecedented shift within Cypriot society.
As our anti-imperialist struggle for another world comes to a crux today, it is imperative for our organizing to understand the movements of capital and by extension militarism, and its effects on a global, regional and local level. Therefore, we look forward to delve with you into the complexities of the past and current situation of Cyprus, the land in between.

About Elina Xenophontos
Elina Xenophontos is a geopolitical analyst and international law specialist whose work examines the structural dynamics of global capital through the lens of legal practice and critical political economy. Her analysis is grounded in years of EU-based legal work covering financial crime—alongside research collaborations with corporate accountability centres.
She deploys Marxist and critical theoretical frameworks not as ideology, but as empirical tools for tracing the material consequences of neoliberal governance and imperial statecraft. A writer on Substack and a contributor to alternative news platforms, she offers audiences a rigorously substantiated account of how international law and economic policy produce the geopolitical realities of the present, via a materialist lens.
