Van 1 tot en met 13 juni 2021 is het werk Oil and Sugar #2 (2007) van Kader Attia te zien in de publieke ruimte, als onderdeel van Fragments of Repair/Kader Attia! Het videowerk is momenteel te zien ter hoogte van Stadhuisbrug 5, Utrecht, in een raam van voormalig boekhandel Broese (tegenover het stadhuis van Utrecht), van maandag t/m zondag van 08.00–24.00 uur. In Oil and Sugar #2 lost een constructie van suikerklontjes op wanneer er ruwe olie overheen wordt gegoten. Het lijkt op een gebouw dat in slow motion in elkaar stort, wat zich steeds opnieuw herhaalt. Het werk gaat over de plaats die olie en suiker innemen de koloniale ‘architectuur’ van de geglobaliseerde wereld, zowel vroeger als nu. De video verwijst tegelijkertijd naar de plantage- en suikerslavernij, én naar het systeem van aardolie en de winningsindustrie. In de video weerklinkt deze wereld van ongelijkheid, onrecht, armoede, onderdrukking en uitsluiting; dit is wat er schuilgaat achter de façade van het westerse, moderne minimalisme, met zijn perfect rechte lijnen en zuivere esthetiek, waarnaar het witte blok verwijst. Hoewel de constructie langzaam donker wordt en tot een chaos vervalt, slaagt ze erin om eindeloos onveranderd terug te keren. De schijnbare onmogelijkheid om deze vicieuze cirkel van verval en voortdurende heropleving te doorbreken, onthult de weerzinwekkende uitdaging waar het zware werk van dekolonisatie voor gesteld staat. Echter, in elke ondergang, onzekerheid en catastrofe bestaat er tevens een vorm van ontwikkeling, en zodoende een mogelijkheid om vaste patronen om te buigen naar ‘herstel’ – niet als een terugkeer naar wat ooit was, maar als een portaal tussen de ene wereld en de andere.Audio bij het werk:

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
