“I’ve been told that it’s a documentary, but I don’t know the meaning of that word,” zei Jean-Luc Godard ooit met betrekking tot een van zijn ’documentaire-achtige’ films. Deze op het eerste gezicht simpele opmerking raakt de complexiteit van documentaire aanpak binnen de beeldende kunst productie. Men wordt bovendien geconfronteerd met een paradoxale situatie: terwijl wij gewend zijn aan de post-structuralistische ontkenning van waarheid, ervaren wij tevens de groeiende tendens in de hedendaagse kunst om documentairemethoden, ’documentarisme’, te hanteren. Gezien het feit dat de definitie van documentaire luidt: “het presenteren van feiten op een objectieve manier, zonder deze te redigeren of fictioneel materiaal in te voegen” wordt juist vanwege het subjectieve en retorische karakter van kunst het gebruik van documentaire elementen in de kunst onvermijdelijk geproblematiseerd. Binnen deze context wordt de eerdergenoemde complexiteit duidelijk: kunnen we het woord ’document’ nog wel in zijn praktische betekenis gebruiken? Waarom ’documenteren’ in plaats van ’opvoeren’? Welk type kennis—buiten feiten en waarheden—wordt door kunst met een documentaire-inslag geproduceerd? Als kunst niet pretendeert objectief te zijn, hoe gaat kunst dan om met de gegeven of gevonden documenten? Welke effecten bereikt zij dan? En, een cruciale vraag: brengt dit type productie een bepaalde politieke verantwoordelijkheid met zich mee? Vooral met betrekking tot het onderwerp oorlog zullen cultuurcriticus Boris Buden, filmmaker en theoreticus Hito Steyerl en kunstenaar Renzo Martens verschillende voorbeelden presenteren van het gebruik van documenten—ook uit hun eigen werkpraktijk—en deze kwesties kritisch interpreteren.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
