Wat brengt groepen bij elkaar? Welke invloed hebben emoties op het vormen van sociale verbondenheid? Hoe bepalen ze tot welke ‘eerste persoon meervoud’, oftewel tot welke ‘wij iemand behoort? BAK, basis voor actuele kunst (Utrecht), toont in de tentoonstelling Eerste persoon meervoud: empathie, intimiteit, ironie en woede (12 mei–22 juli 2018) hoe kunstenaars de rol van emoties verkennen in het begrijpen van de wijze waarop politieke groeperingen worden gevormd. De tentoonstelling bevat o.a. nieuw werk van kunstenaars Tala Madani en Otobong Nkanga, en dient als kader voor een publiek programma dat onder andere in samenwerking met het Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussel wordt georganiseerd.

De tentoonstelling toont werken van kunstenaars Doug Ashford, Sven Augustijnen, Tala Madani, Liz Magic Laser, Eva en Franco Mattes, Otobong Nkanga en Sarah Vanhee, evenals een bibliotheekruimte samengesteld door 2017/2018 BAK Fellow Sepake Angiama. Deze ruimte, getiteld We Summon Here All Beings Present, Past & Future, toont boeken, films, audiostukken en posters. Er wordt een reeks van publieke workshops georganiseerd om de ruimte te activeren.

Curator Matteo Lucchetti over de tentoonstelling:

“Ieder werk in de tentoonstelling benadert de rol van emoties en affecten in acute politieke situaties op een andere manier. Liz Magic Laser reflecteert bijvoorbeeld op de emotionele impact die Brexit en de verkiezing van Trump hebben gehad op mensen. Doug Ashford gebruikt in zijn schilderijen en video abstracte vormen en kleuren om te laten zien wat deelnemers aan protesten voor sociale verandering beweegt, van de jaren 60 tot vandaag. In hun video’s onthullen Eva en Franco Mattes de emotionele arbeid van de online moderators die gewelddadige en verontrustende content van het internet verwijderen, en zo manipuleren tot welke content wij toegang hebben op populaire sociale mediaplatforms. Alle werken in de tentoonstelling illustreren het belang van emoties in de vorming van politieke omgevingen.”


Publieksprogramma

De tentoonstelling First Person Plural: Empathy, Intimacy, Irony, and Anger biedt ook een kader voor twee performatieve conferenties in BAK’s langlopende serie Propositions for Non-Fascist Living (2017–2020):

Propositions #5: First Person Plural vindt plaats op 19 mei als deel van het Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussel. Het is gewijd aan de nalatenschap van 1968 die 50 jaar later nog steeds voortduurt. Het bevat bijdragen van 2017/2018 BAK Fellows Sepake Angiama, Luigi Coppola, Quinsy Gario, Ola Hassanain, Wendelien van Oldenborgh, en Otobong Nkanga, en onder meer Charl Landvreugd en Marinella Senatore.

Propositions #6: The Temporary Institute for the Contemporary vindt op 30 juni 2018 plaats bij BAK. Tijdens deze conferentie presenteren 2017/2018 BAK Fellows Sepake Angiama, Isshaq Al-Barbary en Diego Segatto (Campus in Camps), Matthijs de Bruijne, Luigi Coppola, Quinsy Gario, Ola Hassanain, Otobong Nkanga, Wendelien van Oldenborgh en Pelin Tan hun onderzoekstrajecten evenals hun “collectieve woordenboekproject”.

De tentoonstelling Eerste persoon meervoud: empathie, intimiteit, ironie en woede is gecureerd door BAK-curator Matteo Lucchetti en geconceptualiseerd door het artistieke team van BAK als onderdeel van de serie Propositions for Non-Fascist Living.

Dit project wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door financiële bijdragen van het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap en Gemeente Utrecht.

BAK’s hoofdpartner op het gebied van onderwijs en onderzoek is Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
