Open Kitchen Weekender

b.ASIC a.CTIVIST k.ITCHEN & Community Portal present Open Kitchen Weekender, a collaboration between different activists, researchers, brewers, artists & community kitchen practitioners.

This event manifests as a multilayered, situated practice with a strong inter-local, DIY mentality. We will connect with local brewers, food activists, Community Kitchens from the Netherlands, Barcelona, and Berlin, as well as artists, musicians, and international affiliates to exchange and develop experiences around collective practices in, out, and around institutions—starting from the (sonic) kitchen table.

Throughout the event and in preparation for it, fermentation as a methodology,* sonic practices, and the dining table become tools and spaces for social engagement, politics, and the nourishment of radical affinities.

By cooking together, brewing the ritual’s beverage, engaging in a cheese-making workshop, radio bending workshop, DJ sets, visual arts, a craft market, sharing knowledge, and communal meals, the Open Kitchen Weekender will explore, question, and document the concept of Nuclear Anarchy** (as learned from fungal hyphae) and its application to community building in, out, and around institutions.

This initiative seeks inspiration to support, create, and preserve cross-contamination, proliferation, and sporulation of Community Kitchens and DIY practices within (non-)institutional landscapes. It is a sonic culinary mutiny building toward sustainable and solidarity-based collaborations for non-fascist futures.

In collaboration with: Berend Bombarius, Daniellis Hernández (Savvy Contemporary, Berlin), Marina Monsonis (La Cuina del MACBA, Barcelona), Giulia Orlandi (Berlin Migrant Strikers Kitchen, Berlin), Cristina Lavosi, Francesco Zedde, Yusser al Obaidi, Lu Lin, Ulufer Çelİk, Boot122, Rebella Pirata Crew, Tabaria Cafe, bItChCraFtiSwiTcHcRaFt events, Cosmo Luhulima, Mirka Farabegoli, Gerardo Gomez Tonda, and many more to come.

*Fermentation as a methodology incorporates non-linear time, reciprocity, and contamination as key ingredients in the processes we aim to cultivate. We reclaim the term “contamination” to highlight its necessity and value in all creative and perishable collective processes.

**Nuclear Anarchy: A non-linear process or traffic flow in which participants and the network/infrastructure respond to stimuli, possibilities, and learnings in reciprocity. These responses lead to directional changes that the entire network adapts to—toward appealing prospects and away from unappealing ones. Examples include dynamic and responsive networks vs. centralized response control, or swarm intelligence vs. brain intelligence.

Field Meal Network / HTSUACK during the Open Kitchen Weekender
17–19 October 2024

A gathering for community kitchen cooks, brewers, food sovereignty activists, and anyone for whom food serves as a tool for collective action. Guided by a central question—how to set up a community kitchen—comrades from the Community Portal’s Field Meal Network present a weekend filled with workshops, discussion groups, cooking sessions, benefit dinners, a solidarity market, and music performances featuring Utrecht’s underground music scene.

Convened by the b.ASIC a.CTIVIST k.ITCHEN, Utrecht, and food activist Berend Bombarius, in collaboration with SAVVY CONTEMPORARY, Berlin (Daniellis Hernández), La Cuina del MACBA, Barcelona (Marina Monsonis), and Berlin Migrant Strikers Kitchen, Berlin (Giulia Orlandi).

This event marks the fifth public meal hosted by the Field Meal Network (FMN), a growing mesh of relationships, fieldwork, research recipes, and food-related activities exploring how community kitchens operate as (counter)organized sites of study and solidarity. Over the past ten months, the FMN has evolved through road trips, cooking sessions, and informal conversations with anarchist, autonomous, institutional, para-institutional, anti-institutional, and other kitchen initiatives in Berlin, Barcelona, Utrecht, and various locations across the Netherlands. It is currently in the process of figuring out where and in which constellation it will continue given the current financial situation because of the defunding of BAK.
