Op zaterdag 15 september 2018 om 13.00 uur wordt de collectieve performance What Is the City but the People?, naar een idee van de Britse kunstenaar Jeremy Deller, in Utrecht gepresenteerd door BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht in samenwerking met Centraal Museum Utrecht en SPRING Performing Arts Festival. Op een mega-catwalk van 60 meter op het vernieuwde Jaarbeursplein vieren 150 Utrechters de stad en delen hun verhaal tijdens de opening van het Uitfeest. De drie Utrechtse kunstinstellingen slaan de handen ineen om met dit kunstproject een levend zelfportret van de stad Utrecht te creëren. Op de catwalk dit keer geen modellen, maar inwoners die de stad haar unieke gezicht geven.

What Is the City but the People? is een viering van de betrokkenheid van inwoners met elkaar, met de stad en met de wereld. Inwoners als ijsmaker Roberto Coletti, de 13-jarige SkateKeet, rapper Bonsjef, dichter Ruben van Gogh, filosoof Rosi Braidotti delen hun verhaal en ook de nieuwe talenten van DOX, het huis voor jong podiumtalent, lopen over de catwalk. Met muziek, foto’s en korte teksten worden alle deelnemers geïntroduceerd en wordt de stad Utrecht en haar inwoners in de spotlight gezet.

Eclectisch zelfportret
Samen met de regisseur Richard Gregory, de Utrechtse componist Joram Kroon, journalist en schrijver Babah Tarawally en fotograaf Marieke Wijntjes wordt een performance van een uur vormgegeven op de catwalk op het Jaarbeursplein. Een serie portretten en korte teksten tonen op groot scherm het verhaal van de inwoners die op de catwalk lopen. Joram Kroon maakt een nieuwe compositie met muzikanten uit de stad die past bij de Utrechtse deelnemers.

Initiatiefnemer BAK zet met dit project de stad centraal en presenteert een kunstproject door Utrechters en voor Utrechters. Deze collectieve performance markeert eveneens de heropening van het vernieuwde Jaarbeursplein en de opening van het twee dagen durende Uitfeest, de officiële start van het nieuwe culturele seizoen.

What Is the City but the People? is gemaakt door de inwoners van Utrecht en geregisseerd door Richard Gregory, naar een idee van kunstenaar Jeremy Deller.

De Utrechtse editie is georganiseerd door BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht in samenwerking met Centraal Museum Utrecht en SPRING Performing Arts Festival, Utrecht. Verdere ondersteuning wordt gegeven door de Utrechtse organisaties CU2030 Utrecht, DOX en Utrecht Marketing – Culturele Zondagen. Het project is financieel mogelijk gemaakt door het Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, Gemeente Utrecht, het K.F. Hein Fonds, Utrecht, Beatrix Theater, Utrecht en Jaarbeurs, Utrecht.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
