New Women Connectors and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht present the gathering Utrecht for Her: Voices of New Women on Saturday 2 March 2019, from 14–17 hrs. Although taking place before 8 March 2019, the gathering is also meant as a celebration of International Women’s Day.

Utrecht for Her: Voices of New Women gathers refugee and migrant women from all backgrounds to learn about and share challenges that women newcomers experience, and how to veer these challenges toward solutions for policy and community forums to act upon effectively. It provides the opportunity to connect and share stories, experiences, and knowledge, in order to explore the ways of women empowerment. Three invited speakers—or Voices—present their stories, followed by small group discussions that address key topics experienced by newcomer women, such as issues with language and communication, (lack of) social support, and engaging with the education system for their children.

The gathering takes place at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst (Pauwstraat 13a, Utrecht).

The language of the gathering is English.

About

This gathering is part of a new series of collaborations—BAK, basis voor New Women Connectors—between BAK, basis voor actuele kunst and New Women Connectors. It takes place in the framework of the forthcoming project Training for the Not-Yet, initiated by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, at BAK in September–December 2019.

New Women Connectors

New Women Connectors is a platform that strives to connect newcomer women and amplify the voices of those who often feel voiceless. Envisioned, created, and led by migrant refugee women, New Women Connectors focuses on ensuring all voices are heard and responded to, so that migrant refugee women can feel empowered. New Women Connectors believe that, by creating an open platform, the exchange of dialog and listening to one another can be facilitated. As a result, these efforts lead to collaborative solutions to urgent matters migrant women face in European cities. New Women Connectors are based in Utrecht and Amsterdam.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

During these sessions—part of the bASIC aCTIVIST kITCHEN (b.a.k.) program in collaboration with Berend Bombarius, De Voorkamer and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst—we want to collectively explore the topic of setting up community kitchens. Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
