Paul Schnabel



Het sociale klimaat – de ‘temperatuur’ – van Nederland is veranderd. Paul Schnabel stelt dat na een periode van politieke rust en algemene tevredenheid met het ‘poldermodel’ – bewonderd in de hele westerse wereld – het in 2001/2002 plotseling zichtbaar werd dat de medaille inderdaad een minder aangename keerzijde had. Een grote groep tot dan toe ‘onzichtbare’ Nederlanders voelde zich door de politiek in de steek gelaten, in de grote steden leidde de vestiging van steeds grotere aantallen allochtonen tot spanningen en traditionele politieke partijen bleken niet langer in staat grote delen van het electoraat aan zich te binden. De aanval op de Twin Towers in New York (9/11), de moord op Pim Fortuyn en de overgang van een hoogconjunctuur naar een economische recessie versnelden het gevoel van ontevredenheid, onzekerheid en onbehagen. Vijf jaar later is het beeld weer anders. Maar van een terugkeer naar de tevredenheid van voor de eeuwwisseling is geen sprake. Economisch gezien is er wel weer een periode van groei aangebroken en ook aan het politieke front is er weer wat meer rust, maar de sfeer is anders en de toonzetting van het maatschappelijk debat blijft opvallend kritisch. De Nederlander van nu is ongeduldig en lichtgeraakt. De kleur van de politieke correctheid is ook veranderd. Men wil zelf niet meer inschikken, maar verlangt dat de ander inbindt. Ook waar in de sociale sfeer sprake is van een klimaatsverandering, kan gesproken worden van een inconvenient truth. Schnabel onderzoekt deze veranderingen in de ‘temperatuur’ van het land en gaat op kritische wijze na hoe de verontrustende ontwikkelingen kunnen worden tegengegaan.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
