De New World Academy (NWA) is een educatieplatform dat stateloze politieke organisaties uitnodigt om hun visie op de rol van kunst en cultuur in politieke strijd te delen met kunstenaars en studenten. De academie werd opgericht door Jonas Staal in samenwerking met BAK en fungeert als een afdeling van New World Summit, een artistieke en politieke organisatie die zich wijdt aan de ontwikkeling van parlementen voor organisaties die van democratie worden uitgesloten. Deze vierde sessie van NWA, The Art of Creating a State, richt zich op de rol van kunst in het representeren van nieuwe, niet-erkende “stateloze staten”.

De Nationale Bevrijdingsbeweging van Azawad (MNLA) bestaat uit een verbond van volkeren uit de Sahel en de Sahara – Toeareg, Songhai, Fula en Arabieren – die gezamenlijk eisen dat het noordelijke deel van Mali wordt erkend als hun onafhankelijke, multi-etnische en multireligieuze staat Azawad. Dit nieuwe land is anderhalf keer zo groot als Frankrijk, met naar schatting 1,3 miljoen inwoners, maar het wordt nog door geen enkel ander land in de wereld erkend. De Azawadiaanse revolutionaire beweging is ontstaan uit het verzet tegen de Frans-Soedanese kolonie en de oprichting van de door Frankrijk gesteunde staat Mali in 1960. Sinds de oprichting van de Malinese staat hebben vier gewapende opstanden plaats gevonden, waarvan de laatste in 2012. In de strijd voor zichtbaarheid en de representatie van de stateloze staat van Azawad hebben kunst, literatuur en muziek een cruciale rol gespeeld, zowel binnen de regio als internationaal.

Tijdens de drie dagen van New World Academy worden deelnemers uitgedaagd om de verhouding tussen kunst en politieke representatie te verkennen en te werken aan de ontwikkeling van voorstellen voor nieuwe representatiemodellen voor niet-erkende staten als Azawad.

De docenten die bijdragen aan deze sessie zijn Moussa Ag Assarid (schrijver en Europese vertegenwoordiger van de MNLA) en Mazou Ibrahim Touré (kunstenaar en kalligraaf, Kunstenaarsassociatie van Azawad). De coordinatoren van de werkgroepen zijn Remco van Bladel (grafisch vormgever, Amsterdam), Rob Schröder (filmmaker, Amsterdam), Gabriëlle Provaas (filmmaker, Amsterdam) en Iva Petkovic (vertegenwoordiger van de Organisatie van Niet-Vertegenwoordigde Naties en Volkeren, UNPO).

New World Academy #4: The Art of Creating a State wordt besloten met een openbaar forum op zondag 19 oktober 2014.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
