Towards a People’s Culture

Towards a People’s Culture concentreert zich op de kritische functie van kunst en kunstenaars in het Maoistisch georiënteerde Nationaal Democratisch Front van de Filipijnen. De nadruk ligt hierbij op het revolutionaire potentieel van de musical, educatieve cartoons, protestpoppen en de zogeheten People’s Trial, een ‘Volkstribunaal’ dat als theatraal model wordt ingezet om staatsterrorisme publiekelijk te veroordelen en te vervolgen.

Samen met Filipijnse kunstenaars, schrijvers, theatermakers en leden van culturele collectieven zoals de Concerned Artists of the Philippines ontwikkelen deelnemers een model voor een transnationaal ‘Volkstribunaal’: een verkenning van het performatieve potentieel van kunst om onderdrukking en ongelijkheid te veroordelen en te berechten.

Docenten: Lisa Ito (lid van Concerned Artists of the Philippines, Quezon City), Luis Jalandoni (voorzitter van National Democratic Front of the Philippines, Utrecht), Walkie Mirańa (lid van Concerned Artists of the Philippines, Manila) en Jose Maria Sison (oprichter van Communist Party of the Philippines en New People’s Army, Utrecht).

Coördinatoren: Matthijs de Bruijne (kunstenaar en vakbond organisator, Amsterdam) en Vincent W. J. van Gerven Oei (filosoof en uitgever, Tirana).

New World Academy Reader #1: Towards a People’s Culture bevat bijdragen van: Ericson Acosta (activist en dichter, Manila), Beatrice de Graaf (Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism, Utrecht), Alice G. Guillermo (theorist, Manila), Lisa Ito, Jose Maria Sison en Mao Tse-tung (voormalig leider van de Communistische Partij, Peking).

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
