In het kader van de lopende tentoonstelling Unstated (or, Living Without Approval) geeft BAK, basis voor actuele kunst met drie public editorial meetings op 11, 18 en 25 april 2016 een aanzet tot een nieuwe publicatie met de werktitel Instituting for the Contemporary. Dit nieuwe deel in de serie BAK Critical Readers in Contemporary Art wordt samengesteld door publicatieredacteur Tom Clark, onderzoekscurator Lucy Lopez en artistiek directeur Maria Hlavajova van BAK. Het doel van deze reader is om de notie van instituting, het opzetten of structureren van een (kunst)instelling, voor te stellen als een geschikt concept voor de hedendaagse situatie. In deze opzet zou de aanhoudende institutionele (re)organisatie tegelijkertijd fungeren als de methode en uitdaging voor de instelling. Instituting for the Contemporary draait om acht centrale thema’s, die de bijdragen aan de drie bijeenkomsten eveneens vormgeven: Education; Entanglements; Not Not Art, Not Not Politics; Care to Power; Compositionalism; the Contemporary; Instituting; Commitment.

Met behulp van presentaties, groepsgesprekken en interventies worden in deze public editorial meetings schetsen en ideeën geopperd waarin wordt toegewerkt naar mogelijke definities van de termen die de reader richting geven. De gezamenlijke feedback en debat tijdens elke sessie dragen actief bij aan de verdere ontwikkeling van de reader.

Aan deze drie evenementen wordt bijgedragen door o.a.: Bernadette Buckley , Angela Dimitrakaki, Sidsel Meineche Hansen, Ewa Majewska, pantxo ramas, Gerald Raunig, Rachel O’Reilly, Simon Sheikh en Tom Vandeputte.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
