“Art and Politics” is de eerste cursus van een nieuwe openbare school voor kunst en politiek, georganiseerd door BAK, basis voor actuele kunst in Utrecht. In zes wekelijkse sessies leren deelnemers op een toegankelijke manier hoe actuele kunst zich verhoudt tot het politieke. De cursus concentreert zich specifiek op de historische periode vanaf het kanteljaar 1989 tot het heden. De sessies bestaan uit een diepgaande analyse van concrete kunstwerken, aangevuld met het lezen van teksten over hedendaagse kunst en de intrinsieke verbindingen van deze kunst met de hedendaagse maatschappij en politiek.
De cursus wordt gegeven door Maria Hlavajova, de algemeen en artistiek directeur van BAK. De case studies en voorbeelden van kunstwerken komen vooral uit BAK’s gerenommeerde internationale projecten Former West (2008–2016), Future Vocabularies (2013–2016), en Propositions for Non-Fascist Living (2017–doorlopend) en uit de praktijk van kunstenaars als Tania Bruguera, Matthijs de Bruijne, Forensic Architecture, Aernout Mik, Rabih Mroué, Christoph Schlingensief, Jonas Staal, Hito Steyerl en anderen.
Iedere bijeenkomst van de cursus biedt een heldere inkijk in geselecteerde artistieke praktijken om zo de grotere trends en ontwikkelingen in het veld van de hedendaagse kunst te belichten, evenals de veranderende opvatting van artistieke productie en de rol van publieke instellingen en kunstinstellingen. Tegelijkertijd raken deelnemers bekend met kernbegrippen en de meest urgente vragen binnen de kunst en politiek.
Deelname aan de cursus staat open voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de vraag over wat kunst vandaag de dag kan betekenen. Kennis of ervaring met het onderwerp is geen vereiste om deel te kunnen nemen aan de cursus.

These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
