Maria Hlavajova
Maria Hlavajova, artistiek directeur van BAK geeft op 30 oktober 2014 een lezing in Boekarest, in het kader van de reeks Evening classes. Deze serie conferenties, filmvertoningen, presentaties en debatten wordt georganiseerd door het Roemeense curatorenprogramma Salonul de proiecte.
Constructing Other Worlds
Bijna een eeuw geleden omschreef politiek denker Antonio Gramsci crisis als een notie die geworteld is in ‘juist het feit dat het oude stervende is en het nieuwe niet kan worden geboren’. Als het werkelijk zo is dat wij ons bevinden in een dergelijk historisch tijdperk dat gekenmerkt wordt door ‘een grote hoeveelheid zieke, naargeestige symptomen’, zoals Gramsci verder voorspelde, hoe kunnen wij dan begrijpen welke mogelijkheden er in kunst besloten liggen ten aanzien van de worstelingen die ons heden typeren? Wat staat onze kunst te doen, nu we afstand nemen van het modernistische erfgoed en we waarnemen hoe het bestaande gezag (op een paradoxale manier) tegelijkertijd zijn greep versterkt en laat vieren? Hoe kunnen wij – met en door middel van kunst – vooruitziende koersen uitstippelen die leiden naar wat we ooit ‘de toekomst’ noemden; hoe kunnen we zo het voorstel leven inblazen om ons niet alleen nieuwe werelden te verbeelden, maar deze ook echt op te bouwen? Maria Hlavajova behandelt deze gecompliceerde vraagstukken vanuit drie invalshoeken – artistieke arbeid, infrastructuur en future publics. Ze put daarvoor uit haar onderzoek binnen twee onderling verbonden projecten waarbij ze betrokken is, FORMER WEST (2008–2016) en Future Vocabularies (2014–2016). Waar het eerste erop is gericht een kritisch begrip te ontwikkelen van de erfenis van het radicale antiautoritaire verzet in 1989, om zo het wereldwijde heden te kunnen heroverwegen en te kunnen speculeren over mondiale toekomsten, probeert het tweede project om concrete voorstellen uit te voeren die de verschuivingen verkennen die zich voordoen in het bestaande conceptuele vocabulaire van de kunstzinnige, intellectuele en activistische praktijk.
Salonul de proiecte is a curatorial program initiated by Magda Radu and Alexandra Croitoru functioning within MNAC Anexa. This program envisages the organization of exhibitions, presentations and debates focusing on Romanian contemporary art and placing young artists’ productions into a broader generational context.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
