Call the Witness, overzicht van de tentoonstelling.

Zeven bijzondere kunstenaars nemen deel aan de tentoonstelling Call the Witness, die actief vanuit hun Roma-identiteiten werken en deze ook ontstijgen. Hun werken zijn ‘getuigenissen’, die in hun eigen specifieke taal getuigen van vroeger leed (zoals de Holocaust) en van tegenwoordige en toekomstige angsten, die nauw verbonden lijken met het bestaan van de Roma in onze wereld. Elk van deze kunstenaars zoekt naar andere mogelijkheden, en stelt ons vanuit de Roma-werkelijkheid voor hoe de dingen anders zouden kunnen zijn.

Deze tentoonstelling maakt deel uit van een onderzoekstraject dat leidt naar het door BAK georganiseerde Roma-paviljoen van de 54ste Internationale Biënnale van Venetië 2011 als collateral event. In opdracht van de Open Society Foundations en op locatie in het Palazzo Zorzi waar het UNESCO Venetië Kantoor is gevestigd, zal het Roma-paviljoen figureren als een tentoonstelling die gaandeweg zal veranderen door de stroom van toegevoegde getuigenissen in de vorm van kunstwerken, performances, lezingen en gesprekken van kunstenaars, filosofen en politici. Hier zal de situatie van de Roma en de Roma-kunst als symbool voor de hedendaagse wereld worden beschouwd en er kan in solidariteit worden nagedacht over een hoopvollere toekomst.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

During these sessions—part of the bASIC aCTIVIST kITCHEN (b.a.k.) program in collaboration with Berend Bombarius, De Voorkamer and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst—we want to collectively explore the topic of setting up community kitchens. Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
