Op dinsdag 27 april presenteert BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, een kunstenaarsgesprek met Mark Boulos. Dit gesprek vindt plaats in het kader van Artists Beyond, een inleiding op de zesde Berlin Biennale voor hedendaagse kunst (11.6.–8.8.2010). De verschillende onderdelen van het Artists Beyond-programma zorgen voor meer inzicht in en betrokkenheid bij het artistieke onderzoek en creatieve proces en maken een uitwisseling mogelijk tussen het publiek en de kunstenaars op de plekken waar het werk wordt gemaakt. Voor deze gelegenheid spreekt BAK curator Cosmin Costinaş met kunstenaar Mark Boulos, wiens werk te zien is op de zesde Berlin Biënnale, over diens methodologieën en manier van werken en over de positie van de kunstenaar in de complexe context waar zijn werk op is gericht.
Mark Boulos werkt op dit moment aan een documentaire video-installatie met meerdere schermen over het voortduren van het communisme na zijn vaak aangekondigde dood en over de relaties tussen liefde, idealisme en rebellie. Boulos is net teruggekomen uit de Filippijnen, waar hij de guerrillastrijders van het New People’s Army heeft gefilmd. De maoďstische opstand vecht daar sinds 1969, maar wordt sinds 2001 bestempeld als ‘terroristische’ groepering door de Europese Unie en de Verenigde Staten. Mark Boulos, geboren in 1975, woont en werkt in Amsterdam en Londen. Hij was een artist-in-residence op de Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam in 2007. Boulos’ documentaires laten een geloof zien dat zo vroom is dat het echt wordt; zijn films zijn gericht op politieke strijdlust en religieuze extase. De Berlin Biennale vindt dit jaar voor de zesde keer plaats op diverse plaatsen in Berlijn. De Biënnale wordt georganiseerd door KW Institute for Contemporary Art en ondersteund door Die Kulturstiftung des Bundes sinds 2004. Tussen 11 juni en 8 augustus 2010 presenteert de Berlin Biennale een verscheidenheid aan hedendaagse kunstpraktijken die vragen stelt over wat het ‘hedendaagse’ is en hoe kunst zich tot deze notie verhoudt. Tentoongestelde werken zijn onder meer te zien in KW Institute for Contemporary Art, de Alte Nationalgalerie en de gebouwen op de Oranienplatz 17 en Mehringdamm 28. Op uitnodiging van Biennale curator Kathrin Romberg stelt kunsthistoricus en kunstcriticus Michael Fried een tentoonstelling samen met werken van Adolph Menzel. Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
