Artists as (Public) Intellectuals bespreekt hoe de definitie van de term ‘intellectueel’ zou kunnen worden uitgebreid door kunstenaars te beschouwen als ‘kennisproducenten’ en zodoende als een intellectueel, en gaat na welke ethische, politieke en sociale implicaties het zou hebben wanneer kunstenaars op die manier zouden worden gedefinieerd.
Wanneer we kunstenaars beschouwen als ‘kennisproducenten’, kunnen ze dan ook als ‘intellectuelen’ worden gedefinieerd? Welk nieuw concept van de intellectueel zou nodig zijn om de uiteenlopende en niet-allesomvattende kunstpraktijken die kennis genereren, te omvatten? Welke gevolgen zou dit hebben voor de ingesleten scheidslijn tussen denken en maken of denken en doen? Als tegenhanger van de klassieke definitie van de ‘universele intellectueel’ die ‘geautoriseerd’ is om waarheden te verkondigen, stelde Michel Foucault de term ‘specifieke intellectueel’ voor. Volgens Gary Hall (die Foucault citeert) is dit individu een “‘savant or expert’ with a ‘direct and localized relation’ to knowledge… The specific intellectual thus represents a ‘new mode of the connection between theory and practice’.” Een andere mogelijkheid is om te spreken van de ‘publieke intellectueel’ wiens benadering van kennis meer toegankelijk en omvattend is. Om curator Charles Esche te parafraseren zou de kunstenaar in onze tijd misschien de rol op zich kunnen nemen van een generalist in een tijdperk van specialisatie.
Het betitelen van kunstenaars als intellectuelen heeft ook een aantal gevolgen voor de kunstenaars en hun artistieke praktijken. Ten eerste vragen we ons af of dit etiket impliciet de waarde van creatief werk vermindert of de aandacht afleidt van de formele of esthetische kwaliteiten van kunst. Zijn kunstenaars bereid, of is het interessant genoeg voor kunstenaars om de functie van intellectueel op zich te nemen? Wat zou dit kunnen betekenen voor de wijze waarop kunstenaars zichzelf in het culturele, sociale en politieke veld positioneren? In welk publiek domein zijn kunstenaars werkzaam, en welke strategieën gebruiken ze om verschillende soorten publiek te zoeken en aan te spreken? In Representation, Contestation and Power: The Artist as Public Intellectual schreef Simon Sheikh: “We must therefore begin to think of artists and intellectuals as not only engaged in the public, but as producing a public through the mode of address and the establishment of platforms or counter publics… in opposition to the reigning cultural and political hegemony of the specific society.” Zijn er manieren van aanspreken die uniek zijn voor de hedendaagse kunst en als die er zijn, hoe kunnen die hun autonomie en oppositionele karakter behouden?

These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
