In vervolg op de overwegingen tijdens deel één, getiteld Beyond What Was Contemporary Art (19–20 april 2012, Wenen), baseert deel twee van het 3rd FORMER WEST Research Congress zich op een – enigszins onverwachte – vraag: “What on earth do they mean when they say art?”, opgeworpen door theoreticus en curator Irit Rogoff in haar afsluitende keynote tijdens deel één van het congres. Op dit moment in de geschiedenis, waarin de hegemoniale formaties die de afgelopen twee decennia de verbeelding van de toekomst gijzelden overal om ons heen ontmanteld worden, lijkt het van kritiek belang om deze zowel lastige als intrigerende vraag niet alleen te stellen, maar ook een zoektocht te beginnen naar de mogelijke antwoorden. De lacune die zich voor ons opent wacht nog om ingevuld te worden door een onderhandeling van betekenissen en (on)mogelijkheden. Op het spel staat de herdefiniëring van kunst voorbij wat we leerden kennen als zowel product van, als propaganda voor het neoliberale kapitalisme.

Sprekers zijn onder meer: Bassam El Baroni (curator and art critic, Alexandria), Delaine Le Bas (artist, various locations, Europe), Mihnea Mircan (curator and writer, Antwerp), Marion von Osten (artist and cultural researcher, Berlin), Rasha Salti (curator and writer, Beirut), Jonas Staal (artist, Rotterdam), and Stephen Wright (theorist, writer, curator, and researcher; Paris). Moderated by David Riff (writer, artist, and curator, Berlin/Moscow).

Het tweede deel van het derde FORMER WEST Research Congress volgt op de opening van de tentoonstelling How Much Fascism? bij BAK, onder curatorschap van What, How & for Whom/WHW.

Deel twee van het 3rd FORMER WEST Research Congress is ontwikkeld door BAK, basis voor actuele kunst en mede-samengesteld door What, How and for Whom/WHW en het FORMER WEST curatorenteam. Deel twee van het 3rd FORMER WEST Research Congress is gerealiseerd in samenwerking met de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht en wordt genereus ondersteund door het Mondriaan Fonds, Amsterdam en het EU Culture Programme, Brussel.

Using the sancocho (a pan-Latin American soup with no fixed recipe) as a tool for research and encounter, Mercado Lourdes (Bogotá, Colombia) will host and organize a series of field meals. These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.

Different strategies, tools, methodologies, and contexts are explored to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the practices and theories of community kitchens.
