Het tweede FORMER WEST Research Congress, On Horizons: Art and Political Imagination, vindt plaats op 4—6 november 2010. Het behandelt het theoretische begrip van de “horizon” in verhouding tot hedendaagse kunstproductie en politieke verbeelding. Het congres maakt deel uit van de reeks openbare bijeenkomsten die ertoe dienen het artistieke, curatoriele en academische onderzoek zichtbaar te maken waarop het project FORMER WEST gegrondvest is. Het is conceptueel nauw verbonden met werk dat tijdens het eerste FORMER WEST Research Congress in november 2009 verzet is, en dat nu het vertrekpunt vormt. Die gelegenheid bracht internationale kunstenaars, onderwijzers, academici en curatoren bij elkaar in een gezamenlijke poging om op kritische wijze de artistieke, theoretische, historische en politieke ontwikkelingen van na 1989 in kaart te brengen die betrekking hebben op de problematiek van de “voormaligheid” van het Westen.
On Horizons: Art and Political Imagination interpreteert de horizon niet alleen als iets dat de suggestie wekt van politieke doeleinden of utopieën, maar beschouwt de omstreden term zelf juist als kader voor elk esthetisch of politiek project. In 1989 overwon de kapitalistische democratie het enig functionerende rivaliserende ideologische systeem, het communisme. Sindsdien lijkt het verlies van een overkoepelend project van sociale vooruitgang de wereld beroofd te hebben achtergelaten van een horizon van verzet tegen de overheersing van het vrijemarktkapitalisme. Niettemin lijkt er binnen de hedendaagse kunst een idee van ‘het politieke’ te hebben postgevat, in de zin van een mandaat tegen de illusie van overheersende consensus. Met hernieuwde krachtdadigheid wordt het potentieel van de kunst als een modus operandi die tot sociale verandering kan leiden teruggeëist. De internationale kunstenaars, academici en curatoren die bijdragen aan On Horizons: Art and Political Imagination verkennen hoe uiteenlopende vormen van artistieke en culturele productie, evenals hun discoursen, bepaalde esthetische en politieke horizonten aanduiden of uitsluiten, en hoe ze deelnemen aan specifieke verbeeldingen, of zelfs nieuwe zouden kunnen maken.
Sprekers zijn, onder andere: Beatriz Colomina (architectuurhistoricus en theoreticus, Princeton), Bülent Diken(socioloog, Lancaster), Caglar Keyder (socioloog, Binghamton en Istanboel), Vasif Kortun (curator en schrijver, Istanboel), Ernesto Laclau (filosoof, Parijs), Lisette Lagnado (curator, São Paulo), Peter Osborne (filosoof, Londen), Ultra-red (kunstenaarscollectief, New York), Shuddhabrata Sengupta (kunstenaar, Delhi), Simon Sheikh (curator, Berlijn), Hito Steyerl (kunstenaar, Berlijn), Gerald Raunig (filosoof, Wenen) en Dmitry Vilensky (kunstenaar, St. Petersburg).

These events activate and connect the multiple affects that have resulted from ongoing research with local producers into the biodiversity of the territory.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
