Academia in the Face of Genocide

Lecture by Dr. Neve Gordon. Professor of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, Queen Mary University of London.

In this talk, Neve Gordon will discuss the response of academic institutions to the genocidal violence perpetrated in the Gaza Strip. After highlighting the destruction of education, and particularly higher education, in Gaza, Gordon will analyse the different strategies universities in Europe and Israel have adopted to silence Palestinian and pro-Palestinian speech and activism while stressing both the Palestinian exception and the clampdown's connection to the 'marketisation of the university' and the rise of extreme right-wing politics.

With Panelists: Dr Annelies Moors, Professor Emerita of Anthropology, University of Amsterdam; Dr Alessandra Spadaro, Assistant Professor of Public International Law, Utrecht University; Dr Faisal Hamadah, Assistant Professor of Postcolonial studies and Transnationalism, Maastricht University; Dr Layal Ftouni, Assistant Professor in Gender Studies and Critical Theory, Utrecht University; Raha Heshmatikhah, Student in Psychology and Member of Utrecht Students for Palestine (USP).

The talk and panel will be followed by an extended discussion with the public about future steps to hold our universities accountable to their obligations of upholding the principles of human rights and justice for all, Palestinians being no exception.
