Please Dance Happily and Freely

Phase II: Move Beyond the Circle
dance workshop and video installation
facilitated by Wang Xue Sophia for the b.ASIC a.CTIVIST k.ITCHEN

In Phase II: Move Beyond the Circle, circle dance functions both as a bodily archive of community and as a disciplined form shaped by processes of nationalisation and stage representation. This project seeks to dance within the circle — and to move beyond it — tracing the freedom of rhythm and body memory.

Before the emergence of modern nation-states and musical notation, rhythm was primarily archived through bodily practice: what are now considered complex or uncountable time signatures were, in essence, deeply intertwined with linguistic accents, the pulse of labor, and the shifting weight of dance steps.

This is an invitation to come together to share and teach circle dances. Through collective dancing and conversation, we will explore the rituals, disciplining forms, and family narratives embedded in these choreographies — how rhythm becomes a site of memory and relation.

Wang Xue Sophia focuses on irregular rhythms. Her long-term project envisions a journey of revisiting irregular rhythms across Eurasia — constructing, through moving images and sound, an archive of rhythms and bodies generated through relations.
