Come to the filmscreening of Monikondee, a film by Alexander van Brummelen & de Haan in collaboration with the indigenous peoples Kalina and Wayana and the Marron peoples Pamaka, Ndyuka and Aluku Netherlands. The film will be followed by a panel talk with members from the Surinamese community, moderated by William Mettendaf and a live music performance by Amber Mo.

About the film
For centuries, the Marrons in the Surinamese jungle kept the capitalist society away. As descendendants of of enslaved Africans who freed themselves from the Dutch plantations, they survived by combining their ancestral knowledge with what they learned from the Indigenous people. But in the past decennia, the destructive practces of resource extraction invade deeper and deeper into the jungle.
The movie Monikondee (Moneyland) follows boatman Boogie, who transports essential load to Indigenous and Marron communities along the border river between Suriname and French-Guyana. Although these inland inhabitants continue to farm their own food, they become more and more dependant from external supply. Floods and droughts make their fields infertile, while goldextraction pollutes the riverwater. An unexpected call from his clan leaders forces Boogie to change course – to the heart of his community. During a dangerous travel stream upwards he sails into a domain.
About Amber Mo
Amber Mo is a Surinamese singer songwriter based in Utrecht. In her music she translates stories into airy, groovy and sometimes sensual jackets; from afropop, rnb to hiphop. ‘Independent and selfmade’ is how she likes to see herself and hopes that through her mucis, she can also put other people into their own power

Over de film
Eeuwenlang hielden de Marrons in het Surinaamse regenwoud de kapitalistische maatschappij op afstand. Als nakomelingen van tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen die zichzelf bevrijdden van Nederlandse plantages, overleefden ze door hun voorouderlijke kennis te combineren met wat ze leerden van de Inheemse volkeren. Maar de afgelopen decennia dringen de verwoestende praktijken van grondstofwinning steeds dieper het regenwoud in.
De film Monikondee (Geldland) volgt bootsman Boogie, die essentiële vracht vervoert naar Inheemse en Marron gemeenschappen langs de grensrivier tussen Suriname en Frans-Guyana. Hoewel deze binnenlandbewoners nog altijd hun eigen voedsel verbouwen, raken ze steeds afhankelijker van externe aanvoer. Overstromingen en droogte maken hun velden onvruchtbaar, terwijl goudwinning het rivierwater vervuilt. Een onverwachte oproep van zijn clanleiders dwingt Boogie om koers te wijzigen — naar het hart van zijn gemeenschap. Tijdens een hachelijke reis stroomopwaarts vaart hij een domein binnen.
Over Amber Mo
Amber Mo is een Surinaamse singer songwriter gevestigd in Utrecht. In haar muziek vertaalt ze verhalen in luchtige, groovy en soms ook sensuele jasjes; van afropop, rnb tot aan hiphop. 'Independent en selfmade' is hoe zij zichzelf graag ziet en hoopt anderen ook in hun eigen kracht te laten staan door middel van haar muziek.
