vinegar making workshop, reading and discussion
Organized by Iliada Charalambous with Garage School of Medicine
(Santiago Pinyol and Kari Robertson)
part of Assembling in Resistance
14:00 - 18:00
Garage School of Medicine continue their Metabolic Literacies series with the third edition : Preservation and Transformation.
From a metabolic perspective, Vinegar is an amazing substance; it can be made from waste and then, in turn, can transform otherwise wasted food into future pickles, ferments and medicines. Vinegar is at once a living, transformative substance and also can suspend (preserve) things at a given moment in time.
In this Metabolic Literacy workshop participants will learn how to make vinegar from fruit scraps and how to use vinegar as a base for pickling and herbal medicine making. Hands-on making processes will be combined with a short reading from Gesturing Toward Decolonial Futures Collective and discussion around the themes of preservation and transformation.
This workshop is open to all, no previous knowledge of vinegar making is required.
It will be conducted in English.
Suggested donation for participation is between €5 - €15
About the Garage School of Medicine
The Garage School of Medicine is the most recent iteration of the ongoing Escuela Garaje, convened by Kari Robertson, Santiago Pinyol. Together, Kari and Santiago developed the Garage School of Medicine during the BAK research fellowship for situated practice (2023-24) and launched the school there in July 2024.
Garage School of Medicine emerges out of the recognition that we face a future of climate migration, rising polarisation, resource depletion and unpredictability in which many hegemonic, epistemic principles will no longer apply, or moreover have set the foundations for their own demise. In this vacuum of uncertainty and grief we ask; how can we make space to study together for an unknown future and begin to shape alternatives? Can we collectively develop some tools, methods and strategies for exuberant survival despite and beyond the necropolitics of capitalism?
GSOM has recently exhibited or facilitated events at Take A Way (Rotterdam), Garage (Rotterdam), Paviljoen aan het Water and Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries (Utrecht).
