Queerigenous Futurologies

Episode 2
book launch, film screening, panel discussion and Dragking show

with Ren Loren Britton, Geo Barcan, Thomas DeFrantz, Eric the DragKing, Mijke van der Drift, Joy Mariama Smith and Sinta Wibowo
convened by Alejandro Navarette Cortés

Queerigenous Futurologies is an event, a platform, a stage and a Learning Object for conversations, performances, readings, screenings through many episodes with different actors to explore the notion of ritual as a counter technology to alienation, and to speculate and imagine horizons of futurity for those bodies who are not adapted to the “norm”.

During this episode of Queerigenous Futurologies we will gather to hold a conversation on consent based on Joy Mariana Smith’s recent book, by reading some passages, interacting with the audience and finalizing with a short performance to raise awareness about consent as a practice. This will be followed by a screening of Geo Barcan’s short film that shows how new technologies like the internet in the framework of globalization on the edge of last century, have affected our bodies and change behaviors. We end the night with a performance by Eric the Dragking whose struggle and attention is put on HIV prevention.

Feel free to join early in the day to participate in the work of two important Basecamp companions for Queerigenous Futurologies: MOOKORE and the Trans Healthcare Study Collective.

Expanded Choreographies of Consent
Book launch, performance and panel discussion
by Joy Mariama Smith with Ren Loren Britton, Thomas DeFrantz, Mijke van der Drift, and Sinta Wibowo

Nested within the learning object Queerigenous Futurologies, Joy Mariama Smith invites you to celebrate and engage with them around the release of their upcoming publication entitled Expanded Choreographies of Consent. This book that will be published by Circadian Books|* is a culmination of Smith’s consent praxis that began while they were a research fellow at [the former iteration of] BAK in 2019 and is ongoing. Read below an excerpt from the introduction of the book by editor Asimina Chremos.

During this soft launch, where guests may participate online or live at BAK Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries, Smith will read a passage from their book, and invite audience members to engage with some consent exercises, followed by a short solo performance by Smith. Then Smith will moderate a panel discussion with esteemed online panelist ) Ren Loren Britton, Thomas DeFrantz, Mijke van der Drift, and Sinta Wibowo. We hope this hybrid event raises awareness and supports the spread of consent culture from wherever you are.

Excerpt from introduction of book

Life asks for proximity, risk, exposure, vulnerability, immodesty, for trust among people who may or may not share power. We often rely on implicit guidelines to govern these exchanges, guidelines shaped by histories of extraction, care, hierarchy, affection, and control that continue to organize how we merge and unmerge our efforts. In our increasingly complex societies, we find ourselves negotiating boundaries without the support of a shared language.

Joy Mariama Smith writes from within and against these conditions. They elevate the topic of consent as a way of calling in implied rules of engagement, eradicating “shoulds,” and inviting more honesty to catalyze personal growth and collective evolution. They present consent as a continuum of relational practice that must be understood in light of inherited assumptions about authority, ownership, and the body itself.

The thinking in these pages is grounded in lived processes with their students, colleagues, and collaborators. What emerges through these pages is not yet another fixed system, protocol, or guideline, but a set of musings, conversations, refusals, questions to ponder, and tools to try.

Surge of Transference
a film by Geo Barcan

Surge of Transference is a video essay that investigates the expansion of the internet in a small Romanian town, where communities have formed and shifted around the newly imported Western technology. Within this micro-universe, the video traces the rapid transformation of the Internet, from the carly days of peer-to-peer software to the upload of online late capitalism.

Dragking performance
by Eric the Dragking

Through electrifying performances, Eric challenges HIV stigma, promotes HIV prevention and PrEP awareness, and celebrates the beauty, strength, and diversity of queer communities. On stage, pain becomes power, vulnerability becomes visibility, and stories often pushed to the margins take centre stage. Eric creates spaces where migrants, queer people, and young people living with HIV can feel seen, heard, and valued. Driven by a vision of a world where people living with HIV live free from fear and full of dignity, Eric uses dragtivism to spark conversation, build community, and remind audiences that survival is only the beginning. Through every performance, Eric turns visibility into collective power and invites others to imagine a future where people living with HIV are not merely accepted, but celebrated.

Queeriginous Futurologies doesn't charge an entrance fee. However, Basecamp runs on little money and lots of love. For your participation, we suggest a donation of in between €3-12. Thank you for your support!

Geo Barcan is an artist, filmmaker and writer. Her films and videos, installations and texts are based on the experiences of marginal subjects. Ecological, cosmological, and technological themes come to the surface through the experiences of beings familiar to the peripheries, at the edge of the world.

Her moving-image practice as a cinema of invisibility, where she tries to capture unseen yet hyper-present forces such as the internet, software, memory or changes unfolding over long stretches of time and that have become so obvious that their after-effects are almost untraceable.

Alejandro Navarette Cortés is a cultural and visual worker, and community organizer based in Utrecht, NL, currently working at BAK BASECAMP for Tactical Imaginaries. Basecamp is an attempt to collectively develop, together with other accomplishes, collaborators and fellows, a radical embodiment of unbuilding and rebuilding cultural infrastructure to face the current political urgencies by levering the imagination toward resilience, survival, renewal, repair and life.

Eric the DragKing - from Burundi to the World, through war, migration, and more than two decades of living with HIV, Eric the DragKing has transformed lived experience into a powerful force for resilience, resistance, and joy through dragtivism, storytelling, and HIV activism.
