Designing Justice Symposium

The “Designing Justice’ programme explores the design of justice and social systems that obstruct or shape freedom. These systems have their roots in racial and colonial violence and continue to manifest in contemporary forms and places of exlusion. How are designers and experts by experience building the necessary alternative for a more just society? What space do we need to question systemic flaws and violence? How can the experiences of victims of police violence and their next-of-kin contribute to this?

Designing Justice is part of an extended programme organised by Nieuwe Instituut with BAK Basecamp and Colored Qollective. In the run-up to the opening of the Building Public Truths exhibition in March 2027 at the Nieuwe Instituut, they are organising two gatherings where architects and other designers, journalists, policymakers, social workers, activists and students will explore the exhibition themes from their own professional and societal perspectives and experience.
